A Complete Correspondence Course In Auctioneering

Thank you for your interest in the Brunswick School of Auctioneering.  This auctioneering correspondence school was founded by the late, Col. Larry Meyer, because he believed many talented people, who were unable to attend a resident auction school, could become skilled and well paid auctioneers.  It turned out, he was right. Since the beginning, in 1989, many former students, with certification from this school, have written to tell of their success.  Col. Meyer thought everyone interested in this career should have a chance to succeed.  He thought resident auction schools were good for those who could take a leave from your regular job and afford lost salaries, and the expenses to go.  However, for those who were not in this position; he originated this home study course, giving his personal instruction through the use of audio cassette tapes.  Our aim is for you to develop the skill, and gain the knowledge you need to conduct public auction sales, after satisfactory completion of this course.
We look forward to working with you.

Col. Charles W. Long, Administrator,
Brunswick School of Auctioneering

Frequently Asked Questions

QUESTION:  What is the Brunswick School of Auctioneering?
Brunswick School of Auctioneering offers you a complete basic auctioneering course.  It is a correspondence school designed for students, who cannot take a two or three week leave of absence from their jobs, and cannot afford lost salaries, and possibly as much as several thousand dollars of expenses, depending upon your area, to attend a resident auction school. Because we do not need large buildings for classrooms, or to house students, the enrollment fee and tuition for Brunswick School of Auctioneering is kept very reasonable.

QUESTION: How can I become an auctioneer by taking this course?
Compact discs, which were taken from Col. Meyer's original audio tapes, will teach you, by using the fast easy way he perfected for you to learn the auction chant.  Many students have proven, that you can be chanting within hours, by using this method.  After you develop a chant, you need to record it and send it to your instructor.  He will listen to your sample tape, and record on your tape, his comments for your improvement.  You may record your questions on your check tapes, and your questions will be answered, by your instructor. This course offers you the basic knowledge you will need to be an auctioneer. The auctioneer's manual, you will be receiving, explains all types of auction sales: real estate, farm machinery, household, antique, auto, and livestock. It gives you valuable tips and tricks of the trade on getting and conducting these sales.  Many of the tips took years of first hand auctioneering experience to learn.  You will receive CDs with drills (to teach you the auction chant) and lecture CDs about perfecting your chant, conducting different kinds of public sales, and tips on how to liven up a sale and keep your audience and buyers excited.  You will have the advantage of playing these lectures over and over (something you could not do if you attended a resident school.)

QUESTION:  How long does the course take to complete?
That depends entirely upon the amount of time you devote to your practice and study.  Usually, students complete the course in about five weeks, working a few hours a day, but you work at your own pace according to what you have time for. Much of this time is devoted to practice of the drills and developing a good auction chant, and you will be able to practice while going about routine tasks. The course must be completed within one year of the enrollment date, unless a student requests an extension, in writing.

Any student who does not complete the program within one year, and later desires to finish the course, must make this request in writing. Any prior unpaid balances, plus a $25 reinstatement fee, must be paid at that time for the reinstatement to be honored.

QUESTION:  What kind of money can I make as an auctioneer?
There is probably no correspondence course that has the potential to make more money than a course in auctioneering does.  The amount of success you can have is unlimited, depending upon how much effort you are willing to put into it and your ability to make productive business contacts.  Most auctioneers are self employed and handle household, antique, farm machinery, business liquidation and real estate sales.  Most work on a commission. The percentage of commission varies depending upon what you are selling.  The usual commission charged on household, antique, business liquidation, and etc. is 10 to 20 percent (depending upon the services you are to provide.)  On real estate and farm machinery auctions, commissions can run 5 to 8 percent.  For example, a $200,000 farm machinery sale, sold at a charge of only 5 percent would earn the auctioneer $10.000.  Certainly, this is not bad for an auctioneer who has gained his knowledge and developed his skills at home through the Brunswick School of Auctioneering.

QUESTION:  After taking the course, what are the requirements for receiving my diploma and honorary title of Colonel?
When you feel you have developed a workable chant, you send a final cassette tape of your auction chant to your instructor for his approval.  If he feels you need further help, he will instruct and help you until he does approve it.  If he feels your chant is adequate to have sales, you will be sent a written test on what you have learned.  When you pass the test with a grade of 70 or above, and you have paid your full tuition, you will be awarded your diploma and honorary title of Colonel.

QUESTION:  How do I determine my individual state's requirements to become an auctioneer?
Generally, this information is available from your state?s Attorney General?s office, or by contacting your state?s auctioneer trade organization.  Remember that state laws are always changing, so you should always keep abreast of any new local laws and regulations.

QUESTION:  How do I get an auctioneer's license after completing the course?
In many states, you purchase an auctioneer's license at the county clerk's office in the county you live in.  Generally, a course in auctioneering and sales management is sufficient preparation to become a licensed auctioneer, however, state laws differ.  About 27 states require state licensing of auctioneers.  Many of these states require passing a state examination, and some have other requirements, before obtaining a state license.  When a state requires an exam, that state also issues the study material for it.  This course will not prepare you for an individual state's exam, and neither can a state's auctioneer's exam prepare you for a career in auctioneering.  That is why you need an auction school.  Brunswick School of Auctioneering can give you the training you need.  Our school is certified to operate by the "Missouri Department of Higher Education," and has complied with the yearly certification process since 1989.

Col. Larry Meyer auctioned sales in Chariton and surrounding counties in Missouri for more than 30 years. He specialized in livestock auctioning, selling the weekly sale for many years at the Brunswick Livestock Auction.
